From Yesterday to Today…
Greenway Fellowship was originally a church plant under the oversight of Calvary Baptist Church in Winchester, Virginia. At that time, the church operated under the name Greenway Baptist Church. Our first service was held on April 17, 1965. Thereafter, we were constituted as a church on August 18, 1967 with 28 charter members. The church was accepted into the Shenandoah Baptist Association on October 5, 1967.
Our church was originally located in the area locally known as Double Tollgate at the intersection of Highway 522 and Highway 340 (Lord Fairfax Highway). That piece of land has been home to a church of some kind since 1898! Over the years it has housed United Brethren, Presbyterians, Mennonites, Methodists and Southern Baptists. Currently, an Anglican Church meets in that facility.
The original building and land were purchased by the Southern Baptist Convention on August 10, 1968 for the sum of $1,000.00. Only the sanctuary existed at that time. Greenway’s first service in this facility was held on August 18, 1968. One year later, ground was broken for an addition to the original building. By August 1971, the addition containing four Sunday School rooms, two baths and a kitchen was finished. Over the next 27 years Greenway would experience spiritual growth and renewal and would see numerous people saved and baptized. There was a period of time in which Greenway had no fulltime Pastor and various laypersons served the church in teaching and preaching.
In 2002 Greenway called a new pastor, Robert Vineyard. Within months Greenway would see people saved and baptized on a regular basis. As a greater understanding of the power, fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit were embraced, considerable growth began to occur. Soon we had outgrown the location at Double Tollgate. At the time, the church leadership was interested in a five-acre lot centrally located on Tasker Road in Stephens City, Virginia. However, the land was not for sale. BUT GOD! Soon He opened the door for the land to be purchased. And a fifteen thousand square foot facility was built which serves as our current gathering place. All glory to Him!
What we believe…
We believe that The Bible is the verbally inspired, infallible and inerrant Word of God.
We believe there is only one God eternally co-existing in three persons: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God the Father born of the virgin Mary.
We believe in His sinless life, His miracles, His death by crucifixion, His burial, His bodily resurrection from the dead, and His ascension to the Father’s right hand where he now intercedes for believers.
We believe in the second coming of Jesus Christ to reign in power and glory.
We believe that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God and that repentance is necessary for salvation. Salvation is available for anyone who will call upon the name of the Lord in faith. Jesus is hope for the hopeless, strength for the weak, love for the hateful, God’s true light in a dark world.
We believe in the Baptism in the Holy Spirit which empowers believers to live and walk in victory. We believe that the present ministry of the Holy Spirit includes the operation of all of the gifts of the Spirit that are described in the New Testament. Therefore, we encourage all believers to exercise theirspiritual gifts for the edification of the body of Christ.
We Believe in divine healing provided for through the sufferings of Christ.
We Believe in the bodily resurrection. Those who have salvation will dwell in God’s presence eternally. Those that deny Christ will experience damnation in eternity.
We Believe in water baptism by immersion in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as an outward expression of the resurrection life we experience in Christ.
We Believe that Communion is a sacrament through those who are in Christ partake of His body spiritually and remember His great sacrifice.
We Believe that in all things there must be charity, which binds the Body together.
Greenway Fellowship is a Spirit-Filled Evangelical congregation. We represent a blending of the Evangelical and Pentecostal streams of the Christian faith.
